It’s true what they say - every time you buy from a small business, an actual person does a little happy dance. Hello from Basil and Fleur’s actual person! My name is Saskia and I’m a Chartered Accountant slash small business owner. Originally from London, I lived in Edinburgh for twelve years and recently moved to the beautiful Scottish Borders.

Stuck in a city centre flat during the coronavirus lockdown, like many people I found myself rushing to the local garden centre as soon as it opened and buying as many houseplants as I could fit into my trolley. Despite knowing that within a few months they would probably be dead (as, ironically, I am a serial plant murderer) or at the very least looking peaky, I was happy to hand over my debit card for the many known benefits of houseplants (cleaner air, boosted mood, more pleasant surroundings etc.). So far, so good.

I then hit a problem. Houseplants come in unsightly brown plastic pots and need a more solid, aesthetic home (and a way to stop soil seeping out onto the floor). The garden centre had a modest selection of pots, none of which I was keen on, and options were particularly limited for the larger plants I’d picked up. Never mind, I thought to myself - I’ll be able to find what I want online or from another nearby store. As I stood next to my trolley, Googling every combination of relevant search words and visiting the websites of every supermarket/homeware store/general retailer I could think of, I soon realised that what I wanted didn’t seem to exist. Thoughts like “why is there no one place to buy plant pots?”, “why is it impossible to buy a large pot for less than £50?” and “I am actively trying to spend money here - why does no one want to take it?!” flashed through my mind.

Begrudgingly, I ended up forking out vast sums of money for a load of pots that I didn’t even like, just so my plants would have a home. I realised that if I had this problem, people would too. There was a huge gap in the market for indoor plant pots (and alternatives) that were simple, stylish and reasonably priced, sold online with speedy delivery and no hefty P&P charge. Another well-known saying was true - if you want something done right, do it yourself. So I did!
